Bamboo Foundation Gambia was created with a clear purpose: to develop practical, sustainable solutions that create real opportunities in The Gambia while protecting the environment and reducing plastic pollution.
Our work begins here in The Gambia.
It begins with land, bamboo seedlings and nurseries. With water, tools and practical knowledge. With people who want to create something that can grow far beyond a single project.
But meaningful change rarely happens in isolation.
To strengthen our work, develop new projects and connect with supporters around the world, Bamboo Foundation Gambia works closely with Friends of the Bamboo Foundation Gambia e. V., a registered non-profit association based in Germany.
Together, we connect local action in The Gambia with international support, expertise and opportunity.
The Work Happens in The Gambia
Bamboo Foundation Gambia develops and implements the projects on the ground.
Our work includes bamboo cultivation, nurseries, environmental activities, practical training, infrastructure development and cooperation with local communities.
Our long-term vision goes much further than simply planting bamboo.
We want to build a sustainable structure around it.
We want to grow bamboo responsibly, develop practical knowledge, create useful products and explore alternatives to materials such as plastic and conventional timber.
At the same time, we want to help create new skills, local value and sustainable income opportunities.
Because planting bamboo is only the beginning.
The real opportunity starts when people can grow it, work with it, transform it and create value from it.
A Bridge to Supporters Around the World
Friends of the Bamboo Foundation Gambia e. V. was established in Germany to support this mission internationally.
The association helps connect our work in The Gambia with individuals, companies, organizations, foundations, specialists and supporters in other countries.
Through this partnership, people from around the world can contribute to the development of our projects.

A central part of this cooperation is Jens Poppe, Chairman of Friends of the Bamboo Foundation Gambia e. V.
Jens brings more than 20 years of experience with bamboo and has supported Bamboo Foundation Gambia through both practical involvement and long-term commitment.
That experience matters.
Bamboo is often described as an extraordinary sustainable resource — and it certainly has enormous potential.
But bamboo is not a miracle solution by itself.
Successful cultivation requires knowledge.
Different species have different characteristics and uses.
Water management matters.
Processing requires the right techniques and equipment.
Products need quality and markets.
And sustainable development requires a realistic strategy beyond the planting stage.
This practical understanding is an important part of our partnership.
Jens has not supported Bamboo Foundation Gambia from a distance. His involvement has included travelling to The Gambia, working directly with the people behind the project and helping with important steps in its development.
The result is a combination that we consider essential:
local knowledge and responsibility in The Gambia, supported by international experience and connections.
Local Leadership Comes First
International cooperation can strengthen a project.
But it should never replace local responsibility.
Bamboo Foundation Gambia is rooted in The Gambia, and the people who understand the country, communities, land, climate, opportunities and everyday challenges remain at the centre of the work.
Omar Darboe and the team of Bamboo Foundation Gambia provide that local leadership.
They are the people who turn plans into practical action.
They manage the work on the ground, develop local relationships and deal with the realities that cannot be understood from thousands of kilometres away.
Our partnership is therefore not based on one organization directing another.

Developing sustainable projects requires resources.
